How to use the markdown table generator tool
-
Paste rows
Copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets (tab-separated), CSV, or pasted table text. The delimiter is detected automatically.
-
Set header and alignment
The first row becomes the header by default. Choose left, centre or right alignment for the whole table.
-
Copy into your README
The table is padded so it reads well as plain text in the raw Markdown, not just when rendered.
What makes this one different
- Delimiter auto-detection: comma, tab or pipe
- Aligned output — columns are padded, so the raw Markdown stays readable
- Pipes inside cell values are escaped so they cannot break the table
- Quoted CSV values with embedded commas and newlines parse correctly
- Repeating an existing Markdown separator row is detected and skipped
Privacy by architecture: this page contains no analytics that receive your input, and the conversion code runs in your tab. You can disconnect from the network after loading and keep working.
Markdown Table Generator — frequently asked questions
Why align the table instead of using minimal Markdown?
Because README files are read in raw form at least as often as rendered form — in editors, diffs and terminals. Padded columns make the source readable, and Markdown renderers ignore the extra spaces.
Can I convert a Markdown table back to CSV?
Yes — paste the table; a pipe-delimited input is recognised and the existing separator row is skipped, so you get the data back without the formatting.
Does it escape pipes inside cells?
Yes, with a backslash (\|), which is the standard GitHub-flavoured Markdown escape. Without it, a pipe in a value would silently split the row into extra columns.
Which platforms does the output work on?
GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Obsidian, Notion (via paste), Jira, most static-site generators, and any CommonMark renderer with table support. GitHub Flavored Markdown is the de-facto standard here.
