How to use the csv to json tool
-
Paste CSV or drop a file
Paste from Excel, Google Sheets or a .csv/.tsv file. Delimiters, quotes and escapes are detected automatically.
-
Choose the output shape
An array of objects is the default. Switch to JSON Lines for streaming pipelines, or an array of arrays if the header should not become keys.
-
Cast types if you need them
Enable casting so “42” becomes the number 42 and “true” becomes a boolean. Leave it off when leading zeros or ID-like strings must stay strings.
What makes this one different
- RFC 4180-compliant parsing: quoted commas, escaped quotes, embedded newlines
- Automatic delimiter detection (comma, semicolon, tab, pipe)
- Optional type casting with safe rules — IDs like 007 stay strings
- Array-of-objects, array-of-arrays or JSON Lines output
- Handles files with thousands of rows without truncation
Privacy by architecture: this page contains no analytics that receive your input, and the conversion code runs in your tab. You can disconnect from the network after loading and keep working.
CSV to JSON — frequently asked questions
Why does “007” need to stay a string?
Leading zeros are significant in identifiers such as ZIP codes, product codes and phone numbers. Type casting is therefore off by default; enable it only when every numeric-looking column really is numeric.
How are quoted fields containing commas handled?
Correctly — the parser follows RFC 4180, so "Hopper, PhD" is one field, not two. Embedded double quotes are unescaped, and multi-line quoted values are preserved.
Can I convert a semicolon-delimited European CSV?
Yes. Delimiters are auto-detected from the first line, and you can override the choice explicitly in the options bar.
What is JSON Lines output for?
JSON Lines (one JSON object per line) is the format most data tools, log processors and LLM pipelines expect. It also streams better: each line can be processed independently.
Is there a row limit?
No artificial limit — very large files are bounded only by your browser’s memory. A 50 MB CSV converts comfortably on a typical laptop.
