How to use the srt to vtt tool

  3. Copy into your player

Save as .vtt and point your <video> track at it, or paste directly into a player that accepts WebVTT text.

What makes this one different

  • SRT → WebVTT and VTT → SRT, auto-detected from the input
  • Adds the required WEBVTT header and dot-separated timecodes
  • Optional cue renumbering, and an option to strip formatting tags
  • Preserves multi-line cues, cue settings and notes (VTT → SRT strips NOTE blocks)
  • Handles thousands of cues instantly, entirely offline

Privacy by architecture: this page contains no analytics that receive your input, and the conversion code runs in your tab. You can disconnect from the network after loading and keep working.

SRT to VTT — frequently asked questions

Why does HTML5 video need WebVTT instead of SRT?

The <track> element, and every major browser player, implements the WebVTT specification. SRT is a legacy format from broadcast tooling — players that accept it usually convert internally, imperfectly.

Are my subtitles uploaded?

No. The conversion is a client-side text transformation. Confidential or unreleased content never leaves the browser, which is often a contractual requirement for studios.

What happens to SRT cue numbers?

WebVTT does not require them, and they are optional. By default cues are renumbered sequentially; you can turn numbering off entirely.

Does it keep bold and italic tags?

Yes — SRT <b>/<i>/<u> tags are valid WebVTT and are preserved. SRT-specific {an8}-style positioning overrides are stripped, since WebVTT expresses positioning differently.

Can it fix malformed subtitle files?

It tolerates the usual real-world quirks: , or . in milliseconds, one-digit hours, missing blank lines between cues with valid timecodes. Truly broken files get a clear error instead of silent corruption.
